Turn Any Font Into a Sketch Font

There are some popular sketchy fonts available that are great for grungy and hand-drawn designs and illustrations. My problem is, I want to be able to use this sketchy style in any font. Turn’s out, it is actually really easy to do in Illustrator. Moreover, you can create a Graphic Style and easily apply the style to other editable fonts!

Notes

This tutorial was created with Adobe Illustrator CS4, but you should be able to create the tutorial in other Illustrator CS versions.

Final Image

Below is an example of the sketchy text we will be creating.
Final Image

Step 1

Create a new document and with the Text tool (T), type out some text with the with the font of your choosing. I am using Glypha Black as my font.
Step 1

Step 2

With the text selected, take off any stroke and fill. We are going to add a stroke a fill separate from each other in the Appearance panel in the next couple of steps.
Step 2

Step 3

With the no fill and no stroke text selected, open the pop-up menu in the Appearance panel and chose Add New Fill. Keep the default black color of the fill.
Step 3

Step 4

Select the new fill in the Appearance panel and go Effect > Stylize > Scribble. With the Scribble Options dialog open, change the Angle to 45, the Path Overlap to 0 px, the Path Overlap Variation to 2 px, the Stroke Width to 1 px, the Curviness to 0, the Curviness Variation to 50, the Spacing to 2 px, and the Spacing Variation to 1.5 px.
Step 4

Step 5

Select the Stroke option in the Appearance panel and give the text a 2 pt stroke.
Step 5

Step 6

With the Stroke still selected in the Appearance panel, go Effect > Distort & Transform > Roughen. In the Roughen dialog, change the Size to .5, select the Relative radial button, change the Detail to 30, and select the Smooth radial button for Point. This will give the stroke a little distress.
Step 6

Step 7

Now, we have a custom sketchy font. Moreover, you can easily edit the font! To make this technique even more useful, let’s create a Graphic Style so we can quickly apply these effects to other fonts and text. First select your font and take a look at the Appearance panel. You can see all the effects in your type. Now, simply press the New Graphic Style Button in the Graphic Styles panel!
Step 7

Step 8

Now type out some more text and change the font. With the text selected, press the thumbnail of your new sketchy Graphic Style and see all the wonderful sketchy results!
Step 8

Experiment

You can apply the sketchy graphic style to other objects other than text. I also suggest playing around with the Sccrible and Roughen effect settings. Post links to images in the comments with your results!

Get an Invitation to Google plus !!

What is Google+

Google has finally unveiled Google+, the company’s top secret social layer that turns all of the search engine into one giant social network.

Google+, which begins rolling out a very limited field test on Tuesday, is the culmination of a year-long project led by Vic Gundotra, Google’s senior vice president of social. The project, which has been delayed several times, constitutes Google’s answer to Facebook.

The search giant’s new social project will be omnipresent on its products, thanks to a complete redesign of the navigation bar. The familiar gray strip at the top of every Google page will turn black, and come with several new options for accessing your Google+ profile, viewing notifications and instantly sharing content. The notification system is similar to how Facebook handles notifications, complete with a red number that increases with each additional notice.

At its core, Google+ is a social network. The first thing users are introduced to is the Stream. It’s much like the Facebook News Feed, allowing users to share photos, videos, links or their location with friends.

If anyone wants invite please add your Gmail ID in comment section. We will note down and send you the invitation.

Install Firefox 5 In Ubuntu 11.04

Update: Firefox 5 is now available in the official Ubuntu 11.04 security repository so you no longer have to follow the instructions below to upgrade to Firefox 5. Just run a normal update.

Firefox 5 is available to download via Mozilla's FTP servers and because this is a security update for Firefox 4 (which will no longer get updates), it will be available in the main Ubuntu 11.04 repositories soon (I'm not sure when though).

For now, Firefox 5 is available in the Natty proposed repositories, for testing purposes only. Once it's properly tested, it will be uploaded in the main repository. If you want to test Firefox 5 (final), enable the proposed repository in Software Sources (in Ubuntu Software Center, click Edit > Software Sources and enable the proposed repository) and you should get a Firefox update. But please note that enabling this repository, you'll get a lot of other updates which are currently in testing (I'm using it and everything seems to work ok, but it's not recommended you enable it for anything other than testing purposes).

Firefox 5 is also available in the Mozilla Security PPA (for Ubuntu 11.04), but if you use Firefox from this PPA, anything that requires a language pack will fail. If you want to add the PPA anyway and help test Firefox 5, use the commands below:
Via Linux Terminal :
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
